Cold and/or wet weather making you sick

This question has probably been raised here before but I couldn't find a thread on it.

I always hear people saying don't go outside when its cold otherwise you will catch a cold or the flu. Obviously there's no direct causal link (even though some would argue this) but does cold/wet weather lower your immune system so you are more susceptible? To lower your immune system I've heard your body needs to at the point of hypothermia, in which case a common cold isn't your greatest concern. I've also heard the cold and flu viruses thrive in low humidity and cold, which would mean going out in the cold isn't going to make it more likely that you will get sick.

What do the scientific studies/ research say about this kind of stuff? And what do you guys think of it?
