Zimbabwe elections

"Uncle Bob" Mugabe is standing for the seventh time.

Apparently if beaten he will step down:

Quote:

President Robert Mugabe, 89, has said he will step down after 33 years in power if he and his Zanu-PF party lose.

....although, given the history of election irregularities in Zimbabwe, I think it's more likely that opposition supporters are more likely to be those who are beaten.

Quote:

Mr Tsvangirai won the most votes in the first round of the 2008 poll, but pulled out of the run-off with Mr Mugabe because of attacks on his supporters, which left about 200 dead.

The elections are being monitored by the African Union (AU) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC) but not by Western (a.k.a. colonial) observers.

IMO Mugabe and his cronies have destroyed the Zimbabwean economy and created a refugee crisis which has added to tensions in neighbouring countries. My brief experience of working with Zimbabweans in South Africa back in 2007 left me feeling what a terrible shame it was that they had to leave home and live in shanty towns to earn enough to keep their families back home.

I hope that Zanu PF lose, that there is a smooth and safe transition of power and that the new leaders don't follow Mugabe's lead and continue the kleptocracy.
