Can light be canned?

We know a lightning bug can, as long as the source stays alive, giving off light. But what about when the source of light is cut off, after you shine a light into a can, then seal it? Isnt it true that we can see a star for years, after it has burned out? If that`s true, that means light can travel free of the source pushing the light along, right? And the light still retains its form as light, without reverting to dark energy? So if THAT is true, then shouldnt we be able to can the light?, with the right material? Or, is energy absorbed every time it ricochets around inside, takes a quick red shift and shifts to the non-visible light spectrum?, or into some other energy form? If THAT is true, then if you shined a flashlight at a slight angle between two opposing mirrors, so that after so many bounces, it finally leaves the mirror onto a measurable surface...would the light still be white? And if it is, then that means light bouncing off a surface dont slow it down? And if thats true, then why cant we can light? Or...has that been done? And again, if not, why cant it?...like if a jar is mirror-lined?
