Amish Parents of 10 year-old Refuse Chemotherapy, flee

http://gma.yahoo.com/amish-girl-leuk...ries.html?vp=1

So this story comes up at least once a year: Religious parents do not want their child to suffer through chemotherapy, so they disregard a court order and escape to an undisclosed location. Good luck tracking their calls, NSA.

Forum members expressed surprise at the number of commenters on general news sites calling Sylvia Browne a fraud. I expected as much. What I didn't expect was to see the vast majority of commenters supporting the parents in this case. Lots of anecdotes about loved ones who lost 50% of their body weight and "died anyway." Then there's typical boilerplate about "Government tyranny!" and "Freedom of religion!"

From the article:

Quote:

"We've seen how sick it makes her," Andy Hershberger, Sarah's father, told ABC News in August. "Our belief is the natural stuff will do just as much as that stuff if it's God's will."

Which is stupid.

Quote:

"If we do chemotherapy and she would happen to die, she would probably suffer more than if we would do it this way and she would happen to die," he said.

This inverts traditional positions. Social conservatives tend to support life at any cost (e.g., Terri Schaivo, euthanasia), while liberals often consider the importance of quality of life.
