"Disrespected waitress" hoaxes

In recent days a waitress in New Jersey made national headlines after posting a photo to the internet of a receipt from the restaurant where she works, showing that someone who had been served a $93.55 meal drew a line across the "tip" portion of the receipt and instead had written a message saying "I'm sorry but I cannot tip because I do not agree with your lifestyle." The waitress is a lesbian.

The initial posting and resulting news coverage resulted in a public outcry as well as no small amount of donated money pouring in from concerned individuals who heard the story.

Today, however, a couple - who asked that their names not be given, contacted a local news station and sent them an image of their receipt reflecting the same meal price, time and date stamp as the one posted by the waitress, only with $18 listed as the tip and no homophobic note; additionally, they sent the news station a copy of their credit card statement for the period showing a $111.55 charge from the restaurant at that time. They also disputed certain details of the waitress's story about some circumstances around the incident.

This kind of thing sounds very familiar; I'm certain I've heard before of waitresses posting alleged images of receipts showing disrespect from customers online and at least some of those turning out to be hoaxes; but I cannot remember the details of any off the top of my head. Can anyone else shed a little light?
