Advance directives don't apply to pregnant females in Texas

As a currently-pregnant woman in Texas, I was really surprised to read this article in the local news. A woman who was 18 weeks pregnant (i.e., fetus not yet viable) likely had a pulmonary embolism and is now unresponsive and on a ventilator. Her husband states that she would not want to remain on life support. Apparently, however, Texas law prohibits removing a woman from life support (even if she has an advance directive requesting so) if she is pregnant.

So this woman must remain on life support, likely bankrupting her family, against her wishes and her family's wishes, because she's pregnant-- even though the fetus is not yet viable (and may not ever be, as a consequence of her injury/illness). I find this story quite sad for all involved parties.
