Common Sense

There are common sense principles that will lead to success wherever and whenever they're tried.

* The more income that people and companies can keep, the more money they will have to spend or invest to generate economic growth.

* The smaller and closer the level of government that performs a program, the easier it is for the people to have the program changed or abolished.

* No government--local, state, or national--should be allowed to spend more than it takes in, except in time of a genuine national emergency, such as a war or a large-scale, catastrophic natural disaster.

* One of the most basic, vital functions of government is to protect the innocent from unjustified, immoral harm. Therefore, if a woman wants to have her unborn baby killed simply because she didn't "plan" on having him or her, and not because there's been rape or incest and not because there's endangerment, then naturally and logically the government should intercede to protect the baby's life.

* The easier and cheaper it is to start and run a business, the more people will be likely to try to start a business or to buy a business and the more likely it is that businesses will prosper.

* If there is no consequence for failure, most people won't perform as well as they would if there were a consequence. In other words, if people know they could lose their job for poor performance, they will work harder in order to keep their job. Conversely, if they know it's virtually impossible to get fired, they'll be less likely to work as hard as possible. This is why government workers are notorious for lackluster performance and for not caring about the quality of the service they're supposed to be providing (some do work hard, but many do not).

* Government should not be in the business of condoning, much less supporting, conduct that is harmful to those who engage in it and that poses a risk to others. So, when certain sexual conduct leads to a greatly increased risk of STDs, common sense should tell us that government should not condone, much less support via tax breaks, such conduct.
