Meet America’s Most Beloved CEO—Too Bad He Just Got Fired

Meet America’s Most Beloved CEO—Too Bad He Just Got Fired

Quote:

After the wealthy CEO of a supermarket chain was fired, thousands of workers walked off the job in protest—some getting fired themselves. What's up with that?

Workers understandably tend to go on strike or protest for selfish reasons—more pay, better benefits, improved working conditions. Over the last week in New England, however, thousands of employees at Market Basket, a supermarket chain with 71 stores in New Hampshire and Massachusetts, have been sticking their necks out (and in some cases putting their jobs on the line) in support of Arthur T. Demoulas, who was the company CEO until he was fired in June.

Arthur T. Demoulas makes offer to buy Market Basket

Quote:

The Demoulas offer marks a dramatic turn in a series of events that began in late June, when a board of directors led by his cousin, Arthur S. Demoulas, fired him and took control of the business. Arthur T.’s termination provoked repeated protests by employees and customers loyal to him. Eight employees were fired and others have refused to do their jobs, leaving Market Basket stores unable to stock their shelves in recent days.

This is an interesting story to follow. The store are not unionized, but some reports are indicating that the employees are pretty much unanimously taking action - from low level employees up to top managers. The company's new leadership seems to have done enormous damage to the brand name in a very short time.
