Everton fans waiting for their Europa league match have apparently been tear gassed by French police. As usual the fans interviewed say they were doing nothing wrong and that the police and/or home fans are to blame.
Daddy Don followed Middlesbrough on their Europa cup adventure a few years ago and his experience was that well behaved spectators were treated as if they were a significant and immediate risk by the police throughout Europe and almost any boisterousness was ruthlessly quashed. OTOH English fans have a lot of previous history of misbehaving.
One thing in this case is that fans were warned by Everton to avoid the central square in Lille but still went anyway so perhaps they contributed to their fate. Several thousand ticketless fans traveled which is also an issue IMO.
