Drones as terrorist tools.

It seems remote controlled drones (quadcopters mostly) were among the most popular Christmas gifts this year.

I got one myself- albeit one the size of a sparrow that I've only played with indoors.

There have been various recent incidences of people flying them thoughtlessly- near airports for instance. Today, a power firm in Scotland has issued a warning about the hazards of flying them near substations and transformers.

The emphasis so far is on careless misuse causing accidental damage, but the potential to do deliberate damage seems real. Models like DJI's Phantom 2 can carry a GoPro camera , which suggests they could easily hoist a small explosive or incendiary device. The drone itself, at around a kilogram, could cause serious injury.

There are regulations governing use, which it seems many non-malicious users ignore.

I expect to see heavier regulation of these in future and a few big fines handed down to discourage users.

Opinions?
