Strangest DDOS Attack in NZ

To me, this seems unprecedented - an enormous and ongoing DDOS attack is being carried out against the NZ betting agency, TAB.

The TAB stated that they had it covered yesterday, but their success was short-lived, with the attack continuing today, and appearing to have been ramped up further.

I just don't get it. Every other DDOS attack I'm aware of has had a motive - but I can't tie one to this attack. The only result is a small loss to the TAB, with no gain to the attacker.

Opportunity is the other problem. A disgruntled person would be a possibility, except the scope and length of the attack screams out that a massive botnet is involved, which in turn suggests a cyber-criminal organisation rather than some guy in his mother's basement. The scope is well beyond the capacity of even groups like Anonymous, so the lone wolf idea is either silly, or using some means unknown to me.

The TAB has invested jillions of dollars in its web services and the site is extremely well-run, being managed by a mix of company and consulting staff who are mostly people at the top of the game. I know there has been a large number of TAB, isp and consulting staff race back off holiday to try to stop the rot, and they're still losing.

Anyone like to speculate?
