The ultra-orthodox and sexuality.

I listened recently to two separate segments on PRI's "The World". The first dealt with a woman who essentially worked as a sex therapist to the Hassidic community in New York. It's a strange affair. It seems that in this closed society, there is little or no mention of sex....Ever. As a result, young folks, especially women, come to marriage without knowing even the most basic aspects of human reproduction.

So when they come to the therapist (who's also Hassidic) they discuss basic anatomy, the mechanics of the human body, etc, etc.... And then discuss which ways they might take steps to make things more pleasant in the bedroom.

Then..... The client takes these suggestions back to her rabbi who looks over the list and tells the women what it is they may do and may not do....

And tonight, they had a segment on the male side:

It seems that like some other religions, "spilling the seed" by whatever means is a serious no-no. So, no masturbation, and all sorts of extreme measures to avoid the occasion of "stimulation". No autoerotica in this community...

In the event that one needs to provide a sperm sample, or wishes to provide sperm for future use.... The acceptable method is "electrical stimulation" while the fellow is under anaesthesia.

This reminded me of my Catholic youth; where they had serious discussions about such things... Rather than the sinful "off to the bathroom with an old copy of Playboy".... A "needle biopsy" was preferred.

Ouch....

It's no wonder we humans tend to be so hung up sexually.
