alexander the greats hypaspists

Recently a discussion(in which I was wrong) on Persian chariots got me reexamining the army of Alexander the great. A long running debate on this area is on the elite infantry called the hypaspists. The debate centers on the role and equipment of this high status-although peasant raised-unit.
I veer strongly to the belief that the hypaspists,in at least Alexanders day, were a extremely flexible-although normal-unit that could take the place of honor on the right of the army and fight with sarrisa,or could take a light infantry roll and accompany fast flying columns on demand,as they often did.
I have almost two dozen books on alexanders campaigns and army and there are opposing views.
