Unfixable BSOD

I had to buy a new pc. The other one came up with the error "unmountable boot volume" The hard drive as far as I can tell appears to be working. So what I'd like to do is transfer the data on that drive to the new hard drive. There are two ways of doing that I've gathered, 1. Pay someone to tranfer, or, 2. do it myself. If I do it myself the question is how? The old pc is a Dell as is the new one and ran XP Home, the new runs Windows 8.1. Thanks.
