"That'll be $9-95, thanks!" "The Noroviruses is free."

Enjoy your next meal - especially during norovirus outbreaks - as 51% of food workers admit to turning up to work sick.

It's Fox but links to a study that looks legit, and while it mightn't be 100% accurate, it's obvious there's a problem. I am 100% confident it's not limited to USA/Canada.

A quick estimate of norovirus stats shows that 22,000,000 cases hit USA annually, of which say 1/4 are in paid employment. That is a cost of $2.2 Bn in sick days each year.

Seems to me that as it's known that a significant number of norovirus infections come from people handling food and serving it to others, if decent rules to stay away from work are put in place - with paid compensation - we could all save a lot of money.

One company I deal with has it as a sackable offence on the grounds that turning up to work sick is serious misconduct. This is a frozen food company, so it's a sensible option for them and not all companies can afford to be that strict, but allowing staff to work while infectious is potentially business-threatening.

The survey is certainly a good reason to frequent food joints with very high standards, because paying $100 for dinner only to watch it be regurgitated violently twelve hours later is a bit galling.
