[Split Thread] Brexit: Single Markets and Labor (or Labour, I guess)

Here's a question.

Why can't a country have full membership of the single market without unfettered movement of EU nationals?

The accepted answer, beyond the single market being defined by free movement of labour, is that if countries could opt out of the labour part then low wage countries would benefit.

It is (probably) going to be quite some time before the UK is a lower wage country compared to the EU average.

So . . . Why?
