GM to sell Opel/Vauxhall ?

A story in the news in the last week is General Motors' apparent intention to sell Opel and Vauxhall and that Peugeot Citroen have shown an interest.

This intrigues me from a couple of perspectives.

If GM do sell, then AFAIK that leaves them without a presence in the UK volume car market, and I'm not sure whether Chevrolet is doing much in Europe either. It's strange that one of the major global manufacturers would choose to do this when the others all have a significant presence (in many cases including manufacturing).

Also it will be interesting to see how PSA incorporates the former GM plants into their operation. Manufacturing over-capacity is an issue in the European vehicle industry and so IMO there will be closures. It will be educational to see whether UK plants are preferred or not as the Brexit process unwinds - and whether the government needs to come up with a similar (or better) deal to that which has apparently offered to Nissan in order to keep the UK former GM plants open.
