Today a court in Canada refused to freeze the $10.5 million paid out to Omar Khadr, the 15 year old Canadian boy who spent years in Guantanamo Bay prison without counsel or a trial. The widow is trying to have a $134 million dollar judgement in the U.S. enforced in Canada.
Khadr and the government reached an agreement for the $10.5 million after he sued for $20 million over the government's violation of his constitutional rights while he was a detainee. The precedent was set a few years back when the Supreme Court of Canada awarded $10.5 million each to two Canadians sent overseas where they were tortured by allied forces. Canadian officials knew Khadr was being tortured in Guantanamo but did nothing to intervene. They even interrogated him themselves knowing he had been recently tortured.
