What's the difference?

On Saturday, a naked, ranting man went on a spree in Seattle. He bashed in the windows of a Metro bus, hit several cars, and blocked traffic for quite a while. He also showed signs of recent inhalant abuse (silver paint around his mouth and nose). The officers did not attempt to use Tasers.

A couple of weeks ago, a Seattle woman called the police about an intruder. When they arrived, she was distraught and waving a kitchen knife. She was pregnant and had small children in the house. The officer who was trained for Taser use had left it in his locker instead of carrying it.

Also around that same time, a young man was acting bizarrely in the street in a Seattle suburb, chasing people and yelling that he was the Creator. He had an object in his hand that turned out to be a pen. Both officers attempted to Tase him but failed.

What's the difference in these stories? They ended in very different ways. The pregnant woman was shot to death in front of her children. The fetus did not survive. Her funeral was today. The young man with the pen was shot to death also. The man with the hammer was taken into custody and brought to a hospital for treatment of his wounds and/or a psychiatric evaluation.

There was one other difference, too. The man with the hammer was white. The others weren't.
