Immunisation & Religious Freedom

"Religious freedom" is the rallying cry of so many in the USA I sense, but what degree of religious freedom is to be allowed, when one persons exercising their right to it compromises another's safety.

The right to refuse immunisation, has become one of the frontiers where a persons religious convictions, can secure exemption to the detriment of the safety of his/her own children, and the community at large.

In Australia the only religious group that can successfully obtain exemption are the Christian Scientists, but in some other countries the door is wide open. In the USA, Tennessee is one such place and recently an outbreak of diphtheria in Indonesia has illustrated the problem. Children are dying and some Islamic leaders are claiming the immunisation against the disease un- Islamic.
