Candidate cuts AR-15 apart; gets investigated.

Karen Mallard cuts apart an AR-15 to show support for gun control.

Unfortunately for her, she is shown cutting what appears to be an intact lower and upper receiver with an attached barrel; the cut is between the chamber and the muzzle so the rifle appears to have been converted from a rifle to a short barreled rifle. While the cut went through the gas tube destroying the auto loading capability, it can still discharge a projectile. Making a short barreled rifle (barrel <16") requires BATFE approval in the form of a license or tax stamp. People generally don't pay $200 and up for a stunt like this.

13 News Now in Virginia Beach, Virginia reports that Mallard, a school teacher who is running for Virginia's 2nd congressional district and running on a gun-control platform, is under investigation after she was reported to the ATF for creating a "short-barreled rifle" in the video. The creation and ownership of short-barrelled rifles are regulated under the National Firearms Act. Creation of or ownership of an unregistered weapon is a federal crime.
Do I think she will get in trouble? Not at all unless they actually find contraband weapons on her property. People like her (and David Gregory) just know they're above the law and are treated as so by law enforcement.

Mallard says in part;

Mallard fired back at her critics by saying, “For all the NRA trolls out there, I finished the job according to regulation and turned it over to the police.
I wonder if she knows what regulations she was required to abide by when she chopped down the barrel?
