Teen convicted of murder after cops shoot robbery partner

Okay this is a... weird one.

In 2015 a group of five teenagers broke into a home in the small town of Millbroke, Alabama.

The police arrived and began to arrest one of the teens, who was at the time sitting in a parked car out front of the house. At this point the other 4 teens, at least some of which were armed, existed the house and shootout took place. In the shootout one of the teens, A'Donte Washington 16, charged at one of the officers with a revolver and the officer fired in response, killing him.

Okay this doesn't seem to be some sort of "Itchy trigger finger" cop story. The report does say that body cam footage does show Washington charging at officer with a revolver.

Now here's where it gets weird. Last week Lakeith Smith, 17 at the time of arrest, one of the other teens involved in the robbery (and possibly the shooting the article isn't 100% clear) has been found guilty in the murder of Washington. He's now looking at 65 years in prison, 55 years for multiple counts of armed robbery and 10 for felony murder.

Alabama has a "Accomplice Law" where, essentially, if someone dies while you are committing a crime with them, you can be charged with murder even if you didn't actually cause the person's death.

The three other teens have also been charged and plead guilty to murder, theft, and burglary charges but are still awaiting sentencing.
